Excited states at 1399 6 25 keV and 1084 6 20 keV have been identified for the first time in 36Si and 38Si, respectively, and tentatively assigned J 2. The BsE2; 01 ! 21 d values leading to these states and the previously identified 21 states in 32,34Si have been measured, and are compared to shell model calculations. Our results indicate that the 2 1 state in 34Si has a large fp-shell intruder component, and that the 21 states in the N . 20 silicon isotopes can be reproduced assuming an N 20 shell closure. Quadrupole collectivity in silicon isotopes approaching neutron number N = 28
Quadrupole deformation parameters, |β2,(p,p′)|, have been deduced for 36,38,40Si from measured inelastic proton-scattering cross sections. Due to the strong Z = 14 subshell gap, low-lying quadrupole collectivity in these nuclei is attributed to the excitation of valence neutrons. Enhanced collectivity at N = 26 indicates a reduced N = 28 shell gap at large neutron excess in this chain of isotop...

An 879.9(2) keV γ -ray transition has been identified following the β decay of 58V and assigned as the 21 → 01 transition in Cr34. A peak in the energies of the first excited 2 + states for the even–even chromium isotopes is now evident at Cr32, providing empirical evidence for a significant subshell gap at N = 32. The appearance of this neutron subshell closure for neutron-rich nuclides may be...
متن کاملMeasurement of excited states in (40)Si and evidence for weakening of the N=28 shell gap.
Excited states in (40)Si have been established by detecting gamma rays coincident with inelastic scattering and nucleon removal reactions on a liquid hydrogen target. The low excitation energy, 986(5) keV, of the 2(1)(+) state provides evidence of a weakening in the N=28 shell closure in a neutron-rich nucleus devoid of deformation-driving proton collectivity.
متن کاملMoments and mean square charge radii of short-lived argon isotopes
We report on the measurement of optical isotope shifts for 32-4°Ar and for 46Ar from which the changes in mean square nuclear charge radii across the N = 20 neutron shell closure are deduced. The investigations were carried out by collinear laser spectroscopy in fast beams of neutral argon atoms. The ultra-sensitive detection combines optical pumping, state-selective collisional ionization and ...
متن کاملFast Rotation of the N = Z Nucleus 36 Ar
A highly-deformed rotational band has been identified in the N = Z nucleus 36 Ar. At high spin the band is observed to its presumed termination at I π = 16 + , while at low spin it has been firmly linked to previously known states in 36 Ar. Spins, parities, and absolute excitation energies have thus been determined throughout the band. Lifetime measurements establish a large low-spin quadrupole...
